What is a dasha?
A dasha is a chapter of your life ruled by one planet. In sidereal (Vedic) astrology your timeline is split into planetary periods that together span about 120 years, and the planet running your current period colors what that stretch of life is about. Knowing which dasha you are in tells you what to lean into now — it is a calendar of your own seasons, not a script someone hands you.
How your dashas are set
Your sequence is fixed at birth by where the Moon sat among the 27 lunar segments. That starting point decides which planet runs first and the exact order of the rest. Everyone runs the same nine planetary periods, just starting in a different place and at different ages.
Why it is useful
Each period rewards a different kind of move — building, resting, learning, repairing, stepping forward. When you know your current chapter, you stop fighting the season you are in and start working with it. You are still the one acting; the dasha just tells you which actions land easiest right now.
Questions people ask
- How long does a dasha last?
- It depends on the ruling planet — periods range from about 6 years to about 20 years. Each large period also contains smaller sub-periods that shift the tone month to month.
- Can I be in more than one dasha at once?
- Yes. You are always in one major period and a nested sub-period at the same time, which is why two people in the same major chapter can still feel very different weather.
- Is a dasha good or bad?
- Neither. Each period simply favors different moves. A quieter period is for building and repair; a faster one is for stepping forward. The skill is matching your effort to the season.
